A Journey to Jaipur: Exploring the Heart of Craftsmanship
This October, I had the privilege of embarking on a journey to Jaipur, a city bursting with vibrant colors, timeless artistry, and a deep history of handcraft. This trip wasn’t just a work visit; it was a chance to connect with the talented artisans who bring my designs to life and to immerse myself in the processes that make each piece of my collection so unique.
The First Impressions of Jaipur
The moment I arrived in Jaipur, I was greeted by the city’s symphony of sights and sounds – the rhythmic calls from market vendors, bursts of color from stalls filled with spices and fabrics, and the smell of marigold garlands fresh from the fields. Jaipur has long been known as the "Pink City," and it’s easy to see why; the city is a palette of soft pinks, earthy oranges, and deep reds, reflecting a warmth that seems to welcome all who visit.
Meeting the Artisans
One of the most rewarding parts of the trip was reconnecting with the skilled artisans who carve the wooden blocks and print each of my designs by hand. These artisans are masters of a craft that has been passed down for generations, and watching them work is always awe-inspiring. It begins with the meticulous carving of wooden blocks. Each block represents hours of precise carving, often featuring the tiniest details that will later define the character of the print.
These artisans take my hand-drawn designs and carve them into blocks that reflect every line, curve, and detail. Standing by their workbenches, I was reminded how much of their personal pride and expertise goes into every block. There's a beauty in knowing that each tiny imperfection in the carving or print isn’t a flaw but a unique signature of the artisan's touch.
The Printing Process
Once the blocks are ready, the printing begins – and this, too, is a magical experience to witness. I select the colors, inspired by my garden back home in the Cotswolds, and they are meticulously mixed to create the exact shades that bring my designs to life. Watching the artisans dip each block into paint and press it onto fabric with unwavering precision was mesmerizing. The repetition of motion, the soft thud of the blocks meeting fabric, and the gradual formation of patterns felt almost like watching poetry come to life.
One of the highlights was seeing the newest additions to The Mistletoe and Ivy Collection taking shape. As I observed the gentle greens and deep, inky hues blend on the fabric, I imagined how each piece would later bring warmth to winter tables back home. Seeing the mistletoe design with its delicate growth-like pattern, I knew it would evoke the same feeling of joy and wonder that inspired its creation.
A Reflection on Handcrafted Beauty
This journey to Jaipur reaffirmed for me the importance of the process behind every product. I returned home with a renewed sense of gratitude for the hands and hearts involved in creating each tablecloth, napkin, and cushion cover. Each piece is part of a much larger story – one that stretches from the orchards and flower beds of the Cotswolds to the vibrant streets of Jaipur.
It was wonderful to witness, firsthand, the pride these artisans take in their work and to see how my designs could support their craft and livelihood. At a time when so much of the world is speeding towards uniformity and mass production, I feel privileged to collaborate with these artisans, preserving the charm of traditional handcrafts and creating small-batch items with heart.

As I returned home to the Cotswolds, I felt inspired to bring the colors, textures, and vibrancy of Jaipur into my upcoming designs. Each collection will continue to carry with it a little piece of Jaipur's magic and a reminder of the countless hands that make each piece possible.
